Graffiti

My exam centre today was this St.Paul's. Its a boys school in Indore. I was a little before time and I went in to sit in the classroom earlier.

This is what I found written on the last desk of the rightmost row of Class XI-B, engraved skillfully with a rounder.

"Jab main chhota bachcha tha tab main rapper ban na chaahta tha;
ab main bada bachcha hun, ab main raper ban na chaahta hun"

I had to share this.

I would like to bring forth an interesting point here.
Nainy, what u saw may not be the true desires of the guy who wrote it.
with the kind of mentality and language that is prevalent these days,I often find people using words like rape n all quite casually.
I have a couple of friends who whenever they see a good looking girl, comment somewhat like this :
"jabardast maal hai yaar........mann to karta hai iska rape kar daloon" (Sorry for being so gross)
Now I personally found such comments extremely disgusting initially. But then I gradually realized that those ppl hardly mean even 0.01% of what they said. Its just that their language has become crappy. Leave alone doing what they said, they would perhaps never even touch a woman for wrong reasons even if they were persuaded by the woman herself. And its not just an opinion. I have seen enough evidences for that.
Obscenity, to some, is the 'in' thing.
its jus like the BC, MC kinda abuses that ppl use so often, more out of habit than intention.
Thus what u saw could have been just an attempt at lame humour.

Nevertheless, the whole thing is indeed a cause for concern!

@ Everyone concerned

I just posted this cause I thought it was funny. I wasnt/am not expecting an 11th grader to be meaning this.

My Class X board center was a girls' school. Unfortunately for me and the other 200 odd guys in our school (a guys' school), there was no 'His' toilet.

Btw, Is raper even a word?

P.S. Went by...

Um. You thought it was funny that the idea of rape was being tossed around casually by school boys?

Okay.

@ Aishwarya

I'm quite sure he didnt mean it. He coudnt have, "11th Grade!".

Maybe I should write a post explaining this. Media (read - mainly cinema) make it such an everyday display that we dont realize the intensity of things until we come of age. I know I didnt. I didnt understand child abuse, or even that it existed until I was older.

I did think the way he made a jingle was funny.

Aha. And now you are older. And now you do understand and realize. But you still find it funny.

Hmm.

I agree with you that the media trivialises rape and makes it seem like it's not a big deal, yes. That's the problem.

Honestly. You think this kid is going to grow up (and class 11 is close to adulthood, so I'm not sure how much you think he's going to grow) and have a sudden revelation that leads him to realise that rape is a bad thing? Isn't it equally likely (if not more so) that kids who are being inculcated into misogyny and violence at an early age are going to continue to think that violence and misogyny aren't major problems? This is how you create a rape culture - rape isn't committed by a few perverts who happen to be adult men, it's widespread because generations are being taught to see women as lesser than them, to see violence against women as okay, and so on.

I could go on in this vein for some time. But that's the gist of it. Why do you think rapists exist?

Vinod Khare said...

I think feminists like Aishwarya and hamlet pow pow pow (What a name, wow!) go a bit overboard with their abhorrence for the word 'rape'. I agree that rape is a heinous crime and that if you go and analyze deeply then this 'jingle' is very much symptomatic of the gender attitudes of people.

But this does not mean that we cannot disconnect from all of that for a few moments and have a good laugh. After all we do make jokes about other heinous crimes like murder, torture and the likes.

But trust the feminists for going out on the streets and raise slogans every time the word rape is even mentioned. The day is not far when they would start burning all dictionaries which print this word.

Forgive me from drifting away from the enlightening discussion between the sane and the otherwise. So, How was your exam?

@ Neon Zamboski

Yeah, raper is used synonymous to rapist.

My exam was ok. I dont have a clue what to make of my scores any more :( I just do what I can, and hope rest of the time. Thanks for asking , though :)

@ Hamlet Pow Pow Pow

Just as Vinod said, it wont in any way challenge the filth of the act or convey that I do not care enough, just because for a few moments I can step aside and see the humour.

@ Aishwarya

I think rapists exist because frustration does. Not just physical. Its not 'just' lustful perversion, its also anger towards women, towards mankind, towards self, towards system.

I think frustration is one of the biggest elements of instigation in a criminal mind, be it sexual, physical, financial, social or moral.

Did you mean that the generations 'today' are being taught to treat women as inferior? From where I see it, its drastically changing. Its there ofcourse, but its decreasing (subtly so, but yeah I believe its improving).

Also, I'd point out that somewhere here, gender segregation does not prevent rapes or sexual crime, it in turn helps its cause.

@ Nainy: Do you really not expect him to mean it? You grossly underestimate the 11th graders, I must say!

SAURABH said...

well I am a student of St. Pauls and I was in XI B but I never read it . well there are lot of other such stories about our great school . By the way he must have written it just for fun but people who read this have taken it quite seriously . By the way it does spoil my school's name but blogging is about freedom of speech & I think I have given a quite long speech so sorry and nice posts by the way . Nice to see a girl blogging .

11th graders are not kids! i would say they are worse than other 'prospective-rapist' age-groups. i did an audience-research for one of my projects and discovered that guys in this agegroup make the maximum viewership for youtube adult videos, maximum ticket-buyers to adult pubs and theaters..

the rhyme was funny...but that would definitely bring a furiously curious accent to the smile to wonder if this is a rapist in the making??
